Times flies when you're having fun

Written by Megan Cooper on Monday, 30 April 2012. Posted in EVS

The more I feel I am settling into Czech life the more I am coming to realise what an amazing experience this is, I am immersed is such an interesting culture, and working with a wide range of people. I am really enjoying finding out snippets of cultural differences and history. It’s still amazing, even as I come up to the two month mark of my Czech life, to find out the incredible age of the buildings and even whole cities. It’s even more baffling to put this age into context by comparing the mere 200 years Australia has been independent.

I am also finding it so exciting to be able to discover traditional meals that fit my vegan diet, since during communism Czech people had a limited supply of animal products. This small detail is something I couldn’t have possibly even considered before, and it’s these details I get the most joy out of. Since we mentioned food and beer goes hand-in-hand with food I feel its only polite to raise the fact that just like every other person who tastes the phenomenon that is Czech beer I find myself really savouring the flavour, and enjoying when I am given the opportunity to try a new type. I can see why Czechs drink so much beer, it’s almost a hobby.

I feel like a kid at a candy store, though the candy is culture and the kid is not quite a kid :D

Welcome Spring!

or how quiet movie night ended up in long journey

Last Saturday we took on a 33km hike kitted out in our best leprechaun attire in celebration of both Saint Patrick’s Day and the Welcoming of Spring. The fun started at the Plejady Clubhouse the night before with a slumber party style movie evening, then we were up bright an early taking only the brave with us to call in the spring.

It all begins here...

Tha adventures of two lovely ladies.

After a long and stressful journey I was delighted to be welcomed by friendly faces when I finally made it to my new home. Then I was straight into the action meeting the Plejady kids on Friday afternoon, and even getting a few English conversations out of them
Bright and early I was shipped away with them to the winter camp to the beautiful town of Stramberk. While there I got to know thirteen crazy and amazing kids, as we explored this historical town. I tried everything from “the ears of Stramberk” to chasing my first every Geocaching while trying to pick up some words in Czech both from the kids and the leaders.

It's always hard to say goodbye

Hello everybody!!

How is it going your summer? We hope at least the half funny as ours!! Because our summer, besides the weather, its being great!

After the camp, we had holidays and went to visit 3 new countries: Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. We were lucky to see such beautiful places!! We could stay in Vienna at our friend’s place and we met with other volunteers from our group. It was a beautiful city where we spent great time with our friends. After that we moved to Bratislava and slept in a very cheap hostel, there were other 2 days sightseeing and knowing new place, it was small city but with beautiful town centre. Finally we went to Budapest, the city we liked the most, it was amazing!! Very beautiful city!!!

Summer camp in Hostejn

Hello everyone there!!

We are not dead; it’s just that we have had lot and long things since the last time we wrote ;)

First of all we went 15 days to our summer camp, it was indescribably great!! It took place in the middle of the mountains in a beautiful site called “Hoštejn”; for you to have an idea: we were living in tents and there was a big wooden house for the kitchen, dining room and storage room where, by the way, we had friendly dormouse mates!!!!!!! Of course, we didn’t have any kind of luxuries, it was necessary to pump water from the river for we to be able to cook and clean, we had to cut wood for the kitchen, there was no electricity so we approached the sun light as much as possible and then we managed with candles and flashlights. I know that after all these explanations, you are wondering how we took showers there, so it was the easiest task because we had some kind of bathroom and the only thing we had to do was pump and warm the water to that water tank, not so bad ;) We really enjoyed living in that conditions, it was so natural and funny!!!

Good day to everyone!!

Once again we have to apologise for the big and long silence. This time is due to the PTPI European Conference which took place in Katowice – Poland.

Since the beginning it was a big adventure for us. We were supposed to go to Poland on Thursday 16th but there was a strike in all kind of transportations, and we knew that one day before and 1h and a half before the last train we could reach not to suffer the strike!! Because of this we had to run to pack our things and take the train. Once there, hosting families were waiting for us in spite of the last changes...

Ahoj kamarády!!
The last week was a bit different for me! Let me explain you:
I had some free days so I take them as holidays and went back to Spain for a week; it was a surprise for everyone there because they didn’t know that I was going home! Not even my family! So it was great to see people reactions when they saw me, I wish I could record it to show you because it was really exciting.

HELLOOOOOOOOO!!!
It sounds very strange but yes, we are still here!! Is just that we have been very busy this month. It started with other rafting activity but this time with Plejády children, we went to the Morava River and spent the whole day paddling, the water was stronger than the last time and more than one tasted the cold river!!
Straight from rafting we jumped to our mid-term training where we met with our volunteer friends and stayed in a very nice hotel in Mladé Buky for 5 awesome days. We did lot kind of activities there: evaluating how is it going with our projects, team-building activities, we received information about different options and resources to practise after our EVS, and we went uphill the mountain by cable car and enjoyed the sightseeing there but the best was going downhill by “kolobiezka” (some kind of skateboard), it was pure adrenaline!! Also there was time for our own activities so we organized slackline and music workshops. So there were very nice days full of information, emotions and fun!!

Psss psss!!! Yes, you! Ahojjjj!!!

Do you know that we had a great week!?? It’s because we went rafting! It was awesome, we have crossed 25Km of river, it took the whole day and we were quite tired but it was one of the best days in our project. We were a group of 18 people in 7 boats. We enjoyed a good weather and good company. Moreover, we stayed in a wonderful hotel till Sunday, we could have rest and enjoy the accommodation there, which was perfect. There we had the tastiest breakfast in the world!!

It was the last Sunday, we did a workshop with different activities; there were slackline, big balloons and diverse kind of games for children. Besides the weather, a lot of people came and enjoyed the action. We are very happy with the results and looking forward to organize a new project.

last two weeks

Hi there!

These last two weeks have been amazing! We had another presentation in Unicov about our EVS project; we really like it because it helps to spread information about this great program and hopefully there will be new volunteers from these people. Two weeks ago Friday was quite busy, we were preparing appetizers for the Spanish movie, cooking “tortilla” and preparing pictures for the presentation before the film. After the event, we went straight to the mountains were we spent the whole weekend with PTPI members in a wonderful cottage where we did lot of activities: games, collecting wood from the forest, cooking sausages in the bonfire, doing slackline, going for a walk, talking to people and making new friends. We really had a good time there.

Hello everybody!!

I hope you to be alright because these two weeks have been great for us! We did the spring welcoming. We were supposed to go to the mountains and climb it during the night to wait for the sunrise but there was very bad weather, so we stayed in our clubroom with the children and woke up at 4:30am to go to the best viewpoint of the city uphill in the forest. It was nice although cloudy. After that we went to the forest to play in the snow and enjoy the new season. So it was sleepless night and tiring morning but it worth of it...
